School Directory Link: website <p> <p>Thank you for your interest in a career as a Sign Language Interpreter with the York Region District School Board. We require staff who will be responsible for facilitating communication through sign language for students who are deaf/hard of hearing between students, teachers, support staff, parents and others involved in educational programs and the school community in compliance with Board policies and procedures. <p>Salary: $37.96 - $39.31<p>Please Note: You may also be considered for temporary and/or permanent opportunities as they arise throughout the year. <p>Casual Positions: On call, as-needed basis to cover absences of permanent employees ranging from daily occurrences up to 30 consecutive working days.<p>Temporary Positions: This is a position that is available for a period in excess of 30 consecutive working days to replace a permanent employee who is absent on an approved leave of absence (e.g. pregnancy, parental, educational or medical leave).<p><p>Permanent Positions: These are full-time positions (35 hours per week).<p>Major Responsibilities: <p><p> To translate spoken language to sign language and sign language to spoken language between people who are hearing and people who are deaf/hard of hearing. <p> To provide sign interpretation services in a variety of settings, first and foremost facilitating the integration of students who are deaf/hard of hearing with their peers in regular classes. <p> To prepare and gather knowledge of classroom materials in advance to gain thorough understanding to allow for a clearer interpretation in regular classes or other integrated settings. <p> To ensure appropriate seating, lighting and unobstructed space is available to students who are deaf/hard of hearing in order to access the interpreted message. <p> To participate in educational team meetings, including the development and review of progress on the student?s Individual Education Plan (I.E.P). <p> To liaise between the teacher of the deaf and regular teachers regarding any issues arising in regular classes which may impact student progress (i.e. student skill development, behaviour, peer interactions, etc.). <p> To assist in writing daily anecdotal reports, record and help with on-going reporting of student?s programs, and act as a resource person for parent/teacher interviews. <p> To provide note taking services for deaf/hard of hearing students as necessary, when interpreting is not required. <p> To assist the teacher of the deaf with inservicing of staff, parents/guardians, students and others regarding the needs of students who are deaf/hard of hearing and accommodations/modifications of these needs. <p> To work as an active member of the school team to ensure the safety and success of all students. <p> To attend meetings as required. <p> To attend professional development sessions/training as required. <p> To perform other duties as assigned. <p><p>Education, Experience, and Qualifications: <p><p> Secondary School Graduation Diploma with a three-year recognized community college diploma or university degree from an accredited interpreter training program is required. <p> Minimum one year related experience is required.<p><p>Additional Information: <p><p> Employees are expected to work at least 30 days within the current school year to remain on the casual list.
