People like you!This is specialized work in the RCMP detachment of a technical legal nature in ensuring the accuracy and completeness of prosecution reports, expediting same to Crown Counsels, and the efficient processing of persons through the criminal justice system. An incumbent reads and assesses reports for clarity and evidentiary compliance and as necessary directs investigating officers to secure, for court purposes, all necessary details, evidence and statements to prove charges; ensures that all information processed for court files is accurate and complete in order that cases will not be dismissed for technical error or lack of evidence; and liaises with Federal and Provincial Crown Counsels, other federal, provincial and municipal agencies and officials and detachment staff to facilitate the criminal case management process. Provides direction to members in the proper usage and completion of forms for case documentation; apprises members of pertinent case law and policy directives as required. Processes the release of prisoners from the cellblock; ensures that proper court documents are completed and served on the accused; swears information?s before a Justice of Peace; arranges with Sheriff's Department for prisoner escorts when required. As directed, takes DNA samples and fingerprints from individuals for Court purposes. Compiles and maintains records of charges laid by units, stay of proceedings, and case dismissals; may investigate reasons for dismissals, recommends new procedures and practices to enhance the efficiency of services provided. Receives member's leave schedules and court appearance dates and ensures their entry into an automated case tracking system. Performs related work as required.Qualifications include completion of Grade 12, considerable experience in police investigational work and in court procedures; OR an equivalent combination of training and experience. Thorough knowledge of law enforcement practices of the RCMP and of the departmental rules, regulations, policies and procedures applicable to the work, Criminal Code of Canada and applicable Federal and Provincial statutes and Municipal by-laws as they relate to the work performed and of investigational procedures and evidentiary requirements to prove a charge. Considerable knowledge of the criminal justice system and court procedures as related to work performed. Ability to read and assess reports for clarity, accuracy and completeness and to ensure that all proper investigational procedures and evidentiary requirements are met, ensure that investigating officers respond promptly to requests from Crown Counsel for additional information provide direction to members regarding proper documentation, pertinent case law interpretation and policy directives, establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external contacts and to communicate tactfully and effectively orally and in writing. Driver's License for the Province of British Columbia is required.
