*TITLE: BRAKE OPERATOR* *JOB DESCRIPTION* Shapes punched or plain flat steel into specific three dimensional shapes according to drawing specifications using knowledge of the mechanical properties of various metals and metal thicknesses and using proper tooling and set-up procedures to produce a highly accurate quality part: measures overall dimension of raw part checking for correct shear cut; checks shop paper and shop drawing to determine desired design configuration; analyze to determine proper bending sequence; selects proper dies and punches and sets-up calibration by checking dies and punches, stops and back gauge; reviews program for errors; follows set up procedures to ensure process is correct and carefully takes a first-off part and checks dimensionally against drawing and make dimensional adjustments in program if necessary taking care in not producing off specification parts or overloading the gateway requirements of the organization; with proper set -up produces the desired number of units and repeats set-up procedures for next unit; attaches shop paper to finished units, sort by next operation for routing and in the absence of a Machine Line Support person deliver to designated work drop off zone; assists engineering and supervision in troubleshooting problems; expedites gateway items to next operation; understands material flow and part use to better judge critical nature of each part; works with engineering correct design errors; assists in the training of new operators. *SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE:* \_ knowledge of brake operation, controller operation, bend allowances, bend sequencing, machine and part tolerances, material characteristics, machine operation and calculation requirements. \_ ability to bend and shape parts accurately without damaging the punches, dies or machine by learning proper techniques and by following proper procedures and devise new set-ups. \_ knowledge of material type, gauge and stop characteristics, bend characteristics, tool and die selection, bend sequencing and set-up solutions and mechanical operation of the brake to ensure accurate work. \_ ability to read shop paper and drawings. \_ mathematical skills to accurately record counts, check dimensions, interpret drawings, determine feasibility of bending per engineering specifications, and calculate shear size. \_ analytical ability to perform judgements and predict results. \_ knowledge of engineering terminology, design requirements and shop procedures. \_ organizational ability to follow work sequences, reduce set-up times, follow proper procedures, select tool requirements, plan bend sequences, control machine speeds and sort by next operation. \_ communication skills to instruct others, troubleshoot problems and report to supervisors. \_ knowledge of operating requirements for the machine, the tools and the programming aspects of the job. - knowledge of the scanning procedure - ability to read, understand and follow WIP sheet - knowledge of the workers responsibility under the OH&SA *MENTAL EFFORT REQUIRED TO PERFORM THE JOB:* \_ must concentrate on tasks over extended periods without interruptions. \_ must be able to concentrate on fine detail and maintain accuracy levels that are difficult for most people to obtain, there is need for a double level of concentration; at the analytical level and the operational level. \_ works alone even though others operate other machines nearby. \_ capable of calculating procedures mentally without the use of drawings or detailed instructions. \_ close visual attention eg. ensuring tapered parts are properly aligned with back guage. \_ attentiveness to the presence of others for safety or for communication reasons. \_ some repetitive motions and boredom *PHYSICAL EFFORT REQUIRED TO PERFORM THE JOB:* \_ stamina to remain in the same position for extended periods, ability to lift heavy parts and dies. \_ abi- LocationPeterborough, ON
