Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation has declared a health care state of emergency due a severe nursing shortage. Since last fall, the northern Manitoba community has been forced to limit services at its nursing station to emergencies-only. The station requires at least 13 nurses to staff it, but currently there are only four.

McCare Global, a private nursing agency, is offering wages of $85-$100 per hour to Manitoba-based registered nurses willing to staff northern nursing stations. Due to the high need for nurses at these federally-run sites, the agency is offering to pay nurses in advance to complete necessary certification and training.

A nursing shortage in Pimicikamak Cree Nation has resulted in patients going without care. The community’s nursing station is operating at half-capacity, with only five or six nurses normally on staff out of a full complement of 13 or 14.

Pimicikamak Cree Nation, a northern Manitoba First Nation located approximately 550 km from Winnipeg, declared a state of emergency on March 8 in response to a nursing shortage. Only 4 of 13 nursing positions were staffed. The band has a population of more than 9,000 people, including more than 6,000 living on-reserve.
