A new Costco is currently under construction in Winnipeg. The new 167,000 sq-ft. store is set to open before Christmas 2025.
Peavey Industries, owner of Peavey Mart, announced it is closing all 90 stores across Canada, including six in Manitoba, after receiving creditor protection on January 27. There are two stores in Winnipeg, and one in Steinbach, Winkler, Brandon and Swan River.
Two 7-Eleven stores in Winnipeg recently closed and were boarded up on January 24. While the exact reasons for the closures are unclear, 7-Eleven’s parent company, Seven & I Holdings, had previously raised concerns about employee safety and rising crime with Winnipeg’s city council, as well as plans to close underperforming stores. Despite these closures, Seven & I Holdings plans to expand by opening 500 new stores in the U.S. and Canada in 2027.
Comark Holding, owner of Ricki’s Fashions Inc., Cleo Fashions Inc., and Bootlegger Clothing Inc., filed for creditor protection and plans to close all Cleo and Ricki’s stores, and downsize Bootlegger. There are 13 stores in Manitoba – 10 in Winnipeg and three in Brandon – and a large distribution hub in Winnipeg.
Comark Holdings Inc. – which owns Bootlegger Clothing Inc., cloe fashions Inc., and Ricki’s Fashions Inc. –began proceedings under the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act on January 7. All cleo and Ricki’s stores will be closed, while Bootlegger may downsize its retail spaces. Comark Holdings currently has 221 stores in Canada.
