Ride-hailing service Lyft is now authorized to operate in Winnipeg, having secured approval from the City. Lyft is now hiring drivers and will soon be running alongside Uber and a few local ride-sharing services. Ride-hailing accounted for nearly half of all vehicle-for-hire trips in Winnipeg last year, almost even with taxi companies.
Winnipeg’s public works committee has voted to recommend continuing the City’s wheelchair accessible vehicle program, which began as a pilot project two years ago. The City partnered with taxi companies, training drivers and offering incentives to provide accessible rides. The service was originally scheduled to end on December 31.
Ridesharing company Uride is hoping to launch in Brandon if city bylaws can be amended to allow it. Brandon’s existing bylaws do not permit rideshares, but the company is appealing to City Council to make the necessary changes.
