The closures have mostly been restaurants with some retail and clubs also affected. As of June 2024, the office space vacancy rate downtown was 31%, compared to 19.9% (Halifax) and 15.5% (Fredericton).

During November 2024, 5 well-established restaurants in the St. John's area have announced they plan to close or have closed already, including Pi Gourmet, Bad Bones Ramen, Chinched Restaurant and Deli, The Nook and Cannery and Curry Delight in Mount Pearl. Reasons cited include inflation/cost of living and decreased customer numbers.
