Workers at the Icewater Seafoods plant in Arnold’s Cove can now process cod caught by the provincial offshore fleet. On February 24, the plant received fresh northern cod caught locally by people from N.L. for the first time since 1992. The president says that he hopes his plant will buy 2,500 to 3,000 tonnes of cod from offshore fish harvesters, which is enough for 10 to 12 full work weeks for his staff.

A major player in Newfoundland and Labrador’s seafood industry, Quin-Sea Fisheries, a company based in St. John’s, cut ties with the trade association that represents most of the province’s processors. The company stated that it will continue to process seafood while employing hundreds of people as an independent processor.

The Dildo Brewing Company is expanding as it just opened a new production facility in a former fishplant that will nearly triple its beer production. About 90% of its tap sales happen on-site during the tourism season.

The N.L. Dairy Co-operative has been launched with $10M in provincial government support. Made up of 19 dairy farmer members, the co-op will be the province's only locally owned and operated milk processor. The funding enabled them to buy Central Dairies from Quebec-based Agropur.
