The new hospital in Corner Brook, which opened eight months ago, is still not able to provide radiation therapy to cancer patients due to a lack of staff. According to the clinical chief of the provincial cancer care program, there are still two vacancies for radiation oncologists, two vacancies for radiotherapy positions, and a vacancy for a medical physicist and dosimetrist.

Cross Memorial Hospital in Clarenville is currently without an internal medicine specialist, as two doctors left the region and another started paternity leave leaving the hospital short staffed. Internal medicine is a specialty that is challenging to recruit. The hospital is also facing gaps in pediatrics.

A $50M 20 year-lease contract has been awarded to Marco Group Ltd. for the new Humber Valley-White Bay Community Health Centre in Deer Lake that will consolidate all existing regional health care services. The Labrador Health Centre in Happy Valley-Goose Bay is fully staffed with 16 doctors, alleviating current staffing shortages, primarily due to its 2-year Northern Family Medicine Residency Program that brings in 6 physician residents annually.
