*General Accountability*
As a senior manager in the Union?s staff structure, the Director of Labour Relations builds and maintains the Union?s relationship with diverse employers, labour boards, City Council, and other unions. The position creates cross-functional strategies, plans, goals, and objectives for the area; develops budgets, policies, and functions; and manages a large team of labour relations experts and contracted external counsel. The position focuses on collaborative relationships, interest based and/or positional bargaining, effective problem resolution to ensure the Union?s labour relations infrastructure creates and builds in a respectful workplace and living wages for our membership.
Reporting to the President - CSU 52, the Director of Labour Relations directs and oversees the Union?s Labour Relations Area, for five (5) bargaining units with 7500 members. In this critical and key role, the position establishes and maintains effective labour-management relations, interprets collective agreements, and administers grievance procedures (i.e., problem-solving, consultation, formal review and arbitration), including Alberta Labour Relations Board cases.
The Director, Labour Relations resolves conflicts, negotiates with employers, makes decisions and solves problems, and communicates with elected union officials, subordinates, other unions and employers.
*Technical Requirements*
*Education: *
* A four (4) year University degree in Labour Relations, Personnel Administration, Industrial Relations, Human Resources, labour law or equivalent.
* A master?s degree in Labour Relations, Personnel Administration, Human Resources, labour law or equivalent would be an asset.
*Experience (Preferred):*
* Eight (8) years' working as a Senior Labour Relations Officer or Director with large, significant, and diverse programs and/or portfolios.
* Considerable experience with a broad spectrum of successful labour relations, including grievances, arbitration work, chairing Collective Agreement negotiations, assessing and implementing workforce legislation.
* Managing and supervising a diverse labour relations and human resources team, including contract negotiations, dispute resolution and grievance management, compensation, classification, jurisdiction, OH&S, etc.
* Several years experience working with computer systems and related software programs, database management, etc.
*Note: *A combination of education and experience may be considered. Candidates with a relevant two-year college diploma and significant labour relations experience (i.e., minimum of ten (10) years, may be considered).
*Strong Knowledge of (Demonstrated):*
* Arbitral jurisprudence, supplemented by post-secondary labour relations course work.
* Alberta legislation, including the Labour Relations Code, Employment Standards Code, Occupational Health and Safety Code, Human Rights Act supplemented by strong knowledge of current arbitral jurisprudence.
* Microsoft Office software, Google Suite, and iMIS are an asset.
* Principles of trade unionism and must be familiar with topical issues within the Canadian labour movement.
* Varied and diverse human resources and labour relations principles, policies, practices, and procedures.
* Comprehensive human resources and labour-management relations strategies, plans, goals, and objectives.
* Collective agreements, bargaining, legal precedents, arbitration awards, Alberta Labour Relation Board decisions, labour legislation, etc.
*Skills and Abilities in:*
* Effective verbal and written communication.
* Research, compilation, analysis, and presentation of labour and compensation information and positions to benefits the Union and its members.
* Analyzing and reviewing organizations hierarchy, job design, compensation practices, job classifications, and administrative practices related to those factors.
* Empathize with people from a variety of backgrounds.
* Work under high pressure and demanding timelines.
